Roofing Felt Adhesive.
bitu.®grip is a fibre-filled bituminous solution.
Adhesive for the cold bonding of roofing membranes (malthoids) to substrates and to themselves when working to methods laid down in SABS Code of Practice 021/1973.
Can be used to rejuvenate sound old roofing felt.
Advantages
- Obviates use of hot bitumen.
- Easy to apply cold liquid.
- Filled for optimum coverage.
- Economical.
- Asbestos free.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces to be clean, dry and sound. Surfaces to be treated should be checked by moisture meter and found to be in the ‘safe’ area before coating.
Bonding / Priming
Cementitious surfaces must be primed with bitu.®prime, which must be allowed to dry, before membranes are laid.
Mixing
Stir well before use.
Coverage
Practical coverage: 1,2 m2/L
Application
Application is by stiff brush. Membranes must only be perimeter sealed over about 300 mm width and spot bonded for a first layer. Subsequent layers are fully bonded to the first layer. Membranes must be laid into still wet adhesive.

On timber roofs the first layer is laid with perimeter sealing and the rest of the area is nailed at approximately 500 mm centres using corrosion resistant clout nails. Subsequent layers are fully bonded to the first layer. Membranes must be laid into still wet adhesive. Bonded joints should be rolled immediately with a 50 kg roller to expel any entrapped air and to ensure good overall adhesion.
Roof Rejuvenation
bitu.®grip may be used for rejuvenating old, but still intact, roofing felts. The surface must be clean, sound and dry. Apply bitu.®grip at approximately 1L/m2 over the entire surface. Leave exposed for 4 – 6 weeks and then finish with a coat of silvakote.
Cleaning of Equipment
Tools, brushes and mixing equipment should be cleaned immediately after use and before material has set with abe® super brush cleaner followed by washing with soap and water.
Temperature & Relative Humidity
Application temperature range: 5°C to 40°C.
