a.b.e. Construction Chemicals’ new waterproofing product, abeproof thermo-shield, was used to waterproof of a large roof area of the Sunbel building on Voortrekker Road, Belville. The new product is a heat-shielding, water-based waterproofing membrane with advanced insulation technology that also lowers the interior temperature of buildings. a.b.e.-approved applicator, Hydro-Cape Waterproofing, was approached by the maintenance department of FC Marais, owners of the landmark office block in Bellville, to waterproof about 3000m2  of the Sunbel’s roofing.

a.b.e. technical sales consultant, Brett Papayanni, immediately saw the opportunity to use recently launched abeproof thermo-shield. “I was  invited to inspect the area to be waterproofed and we immediately agreed that abeproof thermo-shield with its heat-shielding properties – coupled with waterproofing qualities – would be the most appropriate to meet the needs of the client,” he said.

“The existing roof had previously been coated with red oxide which needed to be high-pressure cleaned and primed with water-based, metallic etch-primer. This was followed by two coats of abeproof thermo-shield, with the roof sheet overlaps reinforced with polypropylene membrane before the final thermo-shield spray application.”

abeproof thermo-shield is specially formulated with fine spherical particles that minimise surface temperatures on roofs and walls by re-emitting most of the radiant heat energy away before it can penetrate a building. This lowers inside temperatures and reduces the energy costs required to cool the building.

“abeproof can be applied to substrates such as concrete, aluminium, steel, fibre cement sheets, masonry, brick and wood. The product also has anti-mould and anti-fungal properties,” Papayanni states.
